Weather policy
How we decide if Bike Club goes ahead in bad weather, and how we tell you.
In short
A little rain, wind, cold or heat is not always a reason to cancel. Riding when the weather is not perfect helps adventurers build confidence. But Bike Club must stay safe and fun. Some discomfort is fine. Risk is not, and nor is being cold, wet or hot for a long time.
Who decides
The Lead Coach checks the forecast before each session, and again on the morning. They look at the temperature (how it feels), the rain, the wind and the gusts, the ground, and the adventurers who are coming. They look at all of these together, not at one number. Then the session:
- goes ahead as normal
- goes ahead with changes: for example, shorter, with more breaks, or in a more sheltered place
- is cancelled
When we usually cancel
These are a guide, not fixed rules. The Lead Coach decides.
- Below 5°C, most of all with rain or wind.
- 28°C or more, most of all in strong sun.
- Heavy rain, or rain that does not stop.
- Wind gusts of 30 mph or more.
- Thunder or lightning: we stop at once.
- Ice, snow or frost, if there is no safe place to ride.
How we tell you
We aim to tell you by 9am on Sunday, in our WhatsApp group. The weather can change after this, so the Lead Coach can change, pause or end a session at any time.
What to bring
Bring clothes for the forecast: waterproof layers, warm gloves or sun protection, and a drink. If an adventurer’s clothes are clearly not right for the weather, a coach may suggest that they do not ride that day.
